Recollected Signs
Exploring notions of judgement and prejudice experienced by travelling communities during the 1980s and 1990s, a series of wall mounted textile works depict familiar signs displayed outside many retail establishments. Drawing on childhood memories of these signs and the recalled responses by the surrounding traveller society, the text is created by cutting away sections of fabric to reveal bright patterns underneath. Whilst the transformation into fabric softens the signs, the piece illustrates the multi-layered perceptions of discrimination which remain in the memory and become less publically acceptable over time.
